One of the many reasons why people prefer ceramic tile is because it is durable, beautiful, and requires very little maintenance. Though ceramic tile is very durable it is possible to break or chipped the tile if a heavy item is dropped on top of.

Avoid Grout Sealer Types Containing Acid

There are many things that homeowners do that will harm their beautiful ceramic tile floors. Ceramic floors do not like abrasive powders or steel wool for cleaning. The reason to avoid these type of cleaners is because they will scratch the tile which in the long run will allow more dirt into the tile. Another product that you would not want to use on a ceramic floor is anything that contains acid. Acid can easily destroyed the grout and the finish of the tile. Even though water is used as the principal liquid when cleaning tile floors you do not want to allow the water to sit on the floor for a long period of time. Ceramic tiles are waterproof but the subfloor may not be. Never use ammonia or bleach to clean your ceramic floor. These products will discolor the grout. Many homeowners who install ceramic tile floors me wonder whether the grout needs to be sealed. There are two types of grout used for the majority of ceramic tiles. One is a cementitious -based product and the other is an epoxy type product. If you choose the former grout product, cementitious, you will be required to apply a regular sealer. The sealer will prevent staining and help to restrict any moisture from penetrating into the grout. This type of grout will also help to make your maintenance of the tile surface easier.

If you decide to use grout sealer types containing epoxy you will not need to seal it but it will still need to be regularly cleaned and maintained. The preferred method for this type of cleaning is to steam clean the group. There are also many professional strength tile cleaners that are available at your local hardware store. The special cleaners will be able to remove any excessive soap scum, grease, mildew stains, body oil, algae, or certain types of wax buildups.
