Warranty information can also be found on the back of a carpet sample at your dealer's showroom. Check this information before you buy your carpet, but never base a carpet purchase solely on the warranty. Here is more information about what is contained in carpet warranties.

Wear Warranty

Wear warranties relate to the wear of the carpet, but may not be as clear to the average consumer as they are to a manufacturer. With most warranties, wear applies to carpet fibers being worn down to the point that bare spaces develop in the pile. This commonly happens in wool carpets, but rarely in nylon carpets. Nylon carpet makers understand this and offer generous warranties for wear. However, wear does not mean that the carpet suddenly looks "walked on", the warranty terms are much more specific than that. Be sure you understand what your wear warranty entails before thinking you are buying a new carpet that you can refresh and restore a year later by making use of the warranty. It may not be that simple. Vacuuming helps keep pile at its proper height and helps it look like new. When making use of a wear warranty, be sure your carpet has failed to perform to the manufacturer's standards of wear and that you have done all you can to care for it.

Stain Carpet Warranties

Most manufacturers require that the owner makes proper efforts to remove stains and to care for the carpeting properly. Keep bleaching agents away from carpeted areas. Be sure to treat any pet stains immediately. Pet owners may think they can call in a stain warranty because a pet stain caused an area of carpeting to disintegrate, but that is not how it works. The reason is that pet stains, especially those caused by urine, can actually destroy a carpet right through to the backing. This is not something your manufacturer will cover under the stain warranty.

Appearance Warranty

These may not be issued by the manufacturer but by the carpet dealer, instead. If this is the case, the warranty details will appear on your bill of sale. Be sure you understand how the appearance warranty works. It is likely that it is similar to a stain warranty.

You cannot expect a high-traffic area of your carpet to be covered by this type of warranty because you buy the carpet with the understanding that high foot traffic is bound to cause obvious wear. If you see obvious poor wear in an area not frequently traveled by foot, and you have done all you can to maintain the carpet, then your retailer will be able to honor the warranty. Read carpet warranties thoroughly. Take care of your carpets, too, to keep those warranties in effect.
